Birth plan basics

A birth plan is a preference sheet, not a script. It helps your team understand what matters to you while leaving room for safety decisions.

Include

  • Birth place and support people.
  • Comfort and pain management preferences.
  • Newborn care preferences.
  • Emergency contacts and provider details.

Review your plan with your provider before labor, especially if you have medical needs or a higher-risk pregnancy.

Supportive information only. This article cannot diagnose labor or replace guidance from your doctor, midwife, doula, hospital, or local emergency service.
